Apple iPhone 6 only marginally faster than iPhone 5s: Report

Standard

The all-new A8 chip with an M8 coprocessor in the Apple iPhone 6 might only be a slight upgrade from the A7 chip and M7 coprocessor on the iPhone 5s, if a benchmark test by Rightware is to be believed. The benchmark, which focuses only on the GPU or the graphical performance of the tested phones shows that the iPhone 6 is only slightly faster with a score of 21,204 compared to the 20,253 score of the iPhone 5s, which is less than 1,000 points behind.

The phone that tops the list with the fastest GPU performance is the Nokia Lumia 1520, which is powered by a 2.26GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor with Adreno 330 graphics. The iPhone 6 ranks 17th – below flagships from other manufacturers such as the Sony Xperia Z3, LG Nexus 5 and the Lenovo Vibe Z.

While specs aren’t everything, it’s worth noting that Apple claimed that the GPU of the A8 chip found in the iPhone 6 runs 50 percent faster than the A7 equivalent found in the iPhone 5S. The Rightware report contradicts this claim. The biggest upgrade in the iPhone was with the iPhone 5s that shows a considerable leap in GPU performance compared to the iPhone 5.

In real use, though, you are unlikely to notice the difference in the performance even when playing graphics-heavy apps and games. Also, one of the many reasons users prefer Apple iPhones is because of the well-optimised OS that makes it pretty nippy to use. It’s important to remember that the Rightwave report only focuses on the GPU performance and ignores the overall system.
